Editor's note: I flew into Portland, Oregon June of 1980, a month and half after the eruption. There was still ash everywhere, even piled up in ten foot high mounds by the highway. Everything was black, muddy or gray, but during a recent trip to the Benson, flying over the area on a clear day as we approached PDX in a B767, the trees and green patches are returning. Great area to vacation and take the Columbia River Gorge route out to Mt. Hood in your M5.Friday, August 13, 2010
