Motor Trend's New, Used, and Rental Cars to Drive to Your Class Reunion

Used: 2001-2003 BMW M5
If you'd prefer to spend your 20 grand on a car with high-dollar looks and performance to match, your money will go far with an early 2000s BMW M5. Having taken notes on the competition, BMW's M Division one-upped archrival Mercedes-Benz' E55 AMG in 1998 by endowing the E39 5 Series with a 5.0-liter V-8 producing 394 hp. Although that number may sound average by today's standards, consider that the M5's engine had roughly the same output as the Ferrari 360 Modena. It was also powerful enough to earn the E39 M5 the title of "world's fastest sedan," a distinction BMW is battling to reclaim.

Unique bodywork, a lowered stance thanks to an M-tuned suspension, and generously sized wheels enable the E39 M5 to still turn heads in a world filled with four-door eye candy. A six-speed manual was the only transmission offered, and keeps this generation of M5 exclusive to the hardcore row-your-own contingent. With good looks, a performance pedigree, and a price well within reach for most, a used E39 M5 is a compelling alternative to comparably priced new cars. But will your classmates really be impressed if you show up in a 10-year-old car? With nearly 400 hp at your disposal and the capability to hang with more than a few sports cars in the turns, they had better be.
